Since we are going to be using GitHub we will need to register for an account at GitHub if we don’t already have one. Here is a glossary of associated terms, however it is best to pick up terminology while learning how to use GitHub. Some of the commands/terms are fairly self-explanatory, others less so, and in this workshop you will encounter both of these. One of the trickier aspects of using Git is the associated jargon ( repository, add, commit, pull, push, remote, detached head). Two examples of GUIs are GitHub Desktop and GitKraken.Īlthough there are several advantages to using the command line version of Git in the long run, a GUI is a great place to start with learning about Version Control. However, there are several tools that enable the use of Git easily for novices using a Graphical User Interface (GUI), enabling a point-and-click interface. a terminal interface from a UNIX/Linux OS. Usually when programmers use Git for version control of their code, they use the command-line user interface, i.e. Getting Started with Git using a GUI (Graphical User Interface) In this lesson the focus will be on gaining an understanding of the basic aims and principles of Version Control by working with a plain text document using Git (GitKraken & GitHub). Previous: Introduction to Version Control You may learn how to use GitKraken and Git successfully by following this lesson.Īlso, if you have any questions about this or anything else, please feel free to let me know in a comment below or on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.Getting Started with Git using GitKraken | Introduction to Version Control (GitKraken/Github) Introduction to Version Control (GitKraken/Github) GitKraken lesson (forked from HBS-RCS) View on GitHub This brief GitKraken lesson covers the fundamentals, such as installation, connecting to a Git repository, using the interface, creating and switching between branches, committing changes, merging branches, pushing and pulling changes, as well as other topics. In summary, GitKraken is an effective Git client with an easy-to-use GUI that makes it simpler for novices to interact with Git. You can download a cute Git Basics Cheat Sheet through this link GitKraken will automatically fetch the latest changes and merge them with your local repository. Unlike a passive strategy, which rebalances the hedge to a predefined benchmark (say 50% or 100%), here the hedge ratio will be a variable one, often governed by a set of rules. These strategies adjust the hedge dynamically with the objective of achieving a predefined result. So, when should you consider dynamic strategies?.The 'drawback' some perceive is that by reducing exposure to a currency, one reduces not only the associated risk of it depreciating, but the potential profit if it increases in value. This can again be done with a passive portfolio hedge, reducing the exposure to a benchmark, say 20% or 50%. Whilst this can be part of a portfolio manager's strategic view, reducing exposure to specific currencies can drastically improve a portfolio's performance. Investing in international assets can also result in foreign currency exposure. They can implement a passive hedging strategy, enabling the investor to invest in their own local currency whilst mitigating FX fluctuations relative to the fund's base currency. Traditionally, to attract foreign investors, managers launch 'hedged share classes' in locally denominated currencies. The strategy an asset manager implements depends on their objective. When should you consider passive hedging strategies?.Costs such as system infrastructure, Front/Back-office, transactional, execution venue, as well as operational risk, all need to be understood and managed." "Clients should also consider the cost aspect. Solid controls must be in place and underlying investors are more than ever demanding transparency of the full end-to-end process. The perceived divergence in central banks' monetary policy has seen the volatility in currency creep up again, which can have a significant impact on overall performance.įrom an operational perspective, asset managers need to invest in robust systems, capable of processing exposure data from different sources and executing these efficiently. What factors and costs should you be aware of?Ĭurrency has often been left unmanaged as part of a portfolio's natural exposure. This may consume resources, but the alternative could be costly or even crippling. These risks need to be quantified and managed through a transparent, independent currency risk management process. Investment managers expose themselves to currency risk either through international assets or demand from global investors. "In the current climate of regulatory scrutiny and increased volatility, many asset owners and asset managers are addressing their currency management processes, or indeed, lack of it." Marc Tuehl, Global Head of FX Overlay at HSBC, explains the considerations and benefits of outsourcing currency risk management. Achieving greater efficiency for asset owners and managers.Īs central bank policies diverge and FX volatility increases, asset managers are looking for ways to keep on top of this highly liquid market. There is a collective power in this exhibition formed by bringing together such like-minded artists. He expresses so beautifully the healing element that these drawings can offer when he says “I can talk, walk, climb, smile, love and kiss all the sadness goodbye with them.” For each of these kindred spirits, drawing has the ability to give them a sense of wellbeing, balance and contentment. It is at this stage that o2o chooses to make conscious changes, whilst Ahmadi admits that he sometimes wants to do more, but resists the temptation saying “I know that I am not supposed to touch it as the work is already speaking and alive.” He describes his work as holographic, an illusion of a three dimensional space where every line is a tangible presence of experience reflected back. They feel like they are seeing their work for the first time and find themselves attempting to interpret its meaning. The finished drawings are often a surprise to the artists. All of these drawings have an ethereal quality that is like a glimpse from the corner of your eye that is just out of reach of normal vision. With Neate and Nishikawa a further layer of otherworldliness is formed from the act of turning the paper or board while working, producing an ambiguity to its orientation. In the case of o2o the words are from languages we recognise, whereas in Nishikawa’s work it is predominantly an unidentifiable script. They are predominantly monochrome, which Nishikawa describes as “conducive to maintaining a rhythmic flow.” Neate compares the diaphanous gossamers of fine lines surrounding mysterious faces to residual energy from people before us, “like souls sewn in the mesh of time.” Other examples have monolithic shapes or primordial creatures, occasionally embedded with geometric symbols and text. Their drawings depict a connection, harness and release of an energy in the form of an image that is succinctly described by Neate as “part of an eternal memory of which the act of drawing unlocks so that it can appear in the world.”Ĭommon characteristics are evident among the artworks in this exhibition. Through the humble pen or pencil, they are able to render the invisible as a mesmerising reality and capture on paper these ethereal images and fleeting thoughts in an art form that is more than mere creative skill and imagination. It is as if they have connected to a higher force or dipped into a deep universal well of consciousness that is beyond the reach of most people. Subconscious thoughts, memories, souls and spirits draw closer and flow through the conscious mind of the artists with a mysterious force that often feels to them like they are being guided in some way by an unknown entity. It is as if a veil is briefly lifted or a portal has opened to another level of time and space, a parallel dimension within us or around us. He also continues his search for the perfect chair in which to work, whilst Ahmadi found his treasured seat abandoned in a parking lot.ĭrawing is an essential part of the lives of these four artists who begin by establishing a meditative or trancelike concentration that o2o describes as being “out of myself.” Here, real time fades out of focus as they become absorbed in their creativity, and without a preconceived idea of the outcome, their pens glide effortlessly and automatically across the paper. Neate’s pen, for example, will not flow if he is distracted, causing the lines to become heavier. The mood is an important aspect for these artists. Ahmadi uses a candle to alter the light around him, whilst Neate occasionally looks at the flickering and muted television screen showing old British movies that remind him of the past. For the majority, music is often instrumental to the creative process, as is a quiet space without distraction. Over time these kindred spirits have all found ways of working that are favourable to their act of mark making. For others, like Nishikawa, this skill came later through the act of doodling. He discovered his clairvoyant and clairaudient abilities, along with the skill to create, at a young age. Some of this development has taken years, like o2o, whose name symbolises eternal learning or wisdom. Each has a deep understanding of the other’s ups and downs encountered in the development of this unusual artistic process. The irrepressible urge to draw, accompanied by experiences of a spiritual or psychic nature, forms a harmonious bond between the artists. Kindred Spirits presents drawings by four artists whose works possess a numinous energy and compelling beauty. Side cutters cut by indenting and wedging the wire apart and give a cleaner cut than using a knife or scissors.End cutters are also known as nippers and are used to cut through wire, springs, nails, bolts and rivets. The application will dictate which is the best type of cutter for you to use.Types of CuttersUsed by professionals and DIYers alike to cut wires effectively, there are many types of cutters designed for specific applications:Diagonal cutters, also known as side cutters or side cutter pliers, are ideal for gripping, splicing or cutting wires, as well as stripping wire insulation. For example, linesmans cutters also have a small flat section along the jaw for gripping objects as well as their cutting surface. In addition to standard insulation or cushioning, some wire cutters will be VDE-insulated to protect the user when working with potentially live electrical equipment. What are cable cutters used for? While the name may be fairly clear, some variations of cable cutters can also be used to perform other actions. Cutters come in a variety of types and sizes and the three basic types are locking, adjustable and non-adjustable.In order to ensure user comfort and safety, most models of wire cutters & cable cutters will have insulated handles, allowing you to be protected whilst working and providing a firm and comfortable grip. Wire cutters typically consist of two levers connected closer to one end by a fulcrum, with the shorter end forming the jaw. Cutters Cutters are handheld tools designed for cutting cables and wires along with a variety of materials such as metals, plastics and more. Both Sixteen Stone and Razorblade Suitcase were then reissued without the X. In 1997, after the band's second album Razorblade Suitcase also bore the X, Rossdale and Troiano directly negotiated an agreement under which the British band were allowed to drop the X in exchange for donating $20,000 each to the Starlight Foundation and the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund. The dispute arose after the British band's lawyers threatened to intervene to prevent the Canadian band from reissuing its 1970 album, although it was entirely between the bands' lawyers as Rossdale and Domenic Troiano, the leader of the Canadian band, both expressed a willingness to negotiate a solution. In Canada, the band were initially forced to release Sixteen Stone under the name Bush X, as the 1970s Canadian band Bush still held the rights to the name Bush in the Canadian market. Additionally, " Little Things" and " Machinehead" both charted well in North America. After about six months of promotion for Sixteen Stone, the album began to sell well, once "Comedown" and "Glycerine" struck America. 4 on the Heatseekers and Billboard 200 charts. On the Billboard charts (North America), Sixteen Stone peaked at No. Interscope Records ultimately decided to release the album, and at the end of 1994, Kahane sent an advance copy of the album to a friend at influential Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM, which added the song " Everything Zen" to its rotation. Consequently, the bandmates took jobs performing menial labour. Wells eliminated a supporter for Kahane, and executives at Hollywood deemed Bush's album unacceptable for release. However, the death of Disney executive Frank G. The band completed recording its debut album Sixteen Stone in early 1994. In 1993, the band was signed by Rob Kahane, who had a distribution deal with Disney's Hollywood Records. L-R: Nigel Pulsford, Robin Goodridge, Gavin Rossdale, and Dave Parsons. Rossdale's goal was for Bush to sign with 4AD because of his love for their bands Cocteau Twins, Pixies and Throwing Muses. While still known as Future Primitive, the band released the song " Bomb", later to be featured on the band's debut, as a single through Rossdale's own Mad Dog Winston Records. To complete the lineup, the pair recruited bassist Dave Parsons, and drummer Robin Goodridge joined in mid-1993 shortly before Bush were signed. Describing the early sound of the group, one British record label executive said years later, "They weren't what they are today – they were a little like the more commercial side of INXS". They formed a new band which they called Future Primitive. The two musicians became friends over a shared appreciation for several artists, including Big Black, The Fall, Pixies, and The Velvet Underground. History Formation and Sixteen Stone (1992–1995) Īfter leaving his band Midnight, Gavin Rossdale met former King Blank guitarist Nigel Pulsford at a Wembley performance by Baby Animals opening for Bryan Adams in November 1991. The band broke up in 2002 but reformed in 2010, and have released five albums since then: The Sea of Memories (2011), Man on the Run (2014), Black and White Rainbows (2017), The Kingdom (2020), and The Art of Survival (2022). īush have had numerous top ten singles on the Billboard rock charts and one No. 1 album with Razorblade Suitcase in 1996. They went on to become one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1990s, selling over ten million records in the United States and 20 million records worldwide.ĭespite their success in the US (especially in the mid-1990s), the band were considerably less popular in their home country and they have enjoyed only marginal success there. In 1994, Bush found immediate success outside the UK with the release of their debut album, Sixteen Stone, which is certified six times multi-platinum by the RIAA. Their current lineup consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Gavin Rossdale, lead guitarist Chris Traynor, bassist Corey Britz, and drummer Nik Hughes. Bush are an English rock band formed in London in 1992. “There are some really low rates around which work out to AU$5 an hour. Jackie (not her real name) set up Twitter account to raise awareness of the downsides of the gig economy. However, many fear their ability to find work on the site will be affected if they speak out. Low pay remains one of the main reasons not all Australians are enthused with Airtasker. Trade union body Unions NSW, representing 600,000 workers in the Australian state of New South Wales, has called Airtasker a “ superhighway to serfdom”, and warns on its website that it “flagrantly disregards the minimum wage and other labour standards by encouraging workers to compete and underbid each other for bite-sized pieces of work”. They fear that the likes of Airtasker are the next step in the gig economy: driving down wages, busting union agreements and labour standards, and ignoring health and safety in a race to the bottom. Is there a minimum cost when hiring with TaskRabbit? You should communicate with your worker about expectations before they start the job. As independent contractors, each Tasker has their own ways of doing things and their own equipment. Can I expect my Tasker to bring tools or supplies to a job?Ī Tasker may bring tools or supplies to a job, but this is up to their discretion. Unfortunately, you can’t expedite the process by sharing a joint task with multiple workers at once. It presents a risk to you as a consumer, and to them as a corporation. This is mainly because TaskRabbit cannot guarantee outside workers’ quality or background. Taskers are prohibited from bringing outside workers to jobs. If you need more than one worker, you’ll need to go through the hiring process multiple times. Keeping your dialogue solely on the site will establish a paper trail for what is expected during the job. How do I communicate with my Tasker before the job?Īll communication between the Tasker and the client should be limited to the TaskRabbit app and website. General etiquette is to tip $5 for every hour on the job. You can also tip with cash if you prefer. The interface allows you to tip up to 30% of your job’s total cost. It’s best practice to tip your Tasker on the TaskRabbit website after your task is completed. Should I tip my Tasker? If yes, then what is a fair amount? PayPal, cash, or check are also options, but the TaskRabbit payment platform has shown to be secure. Payments can primarily be made through the TaskRabbit app or website. If you want to keep costs low but TaskRabbit isn’t a fit for your needs, check out our guide to cheap moving companies. Our research shows that long-distance moves can cost into the thousands. International Van Lines, one of our top-rated moving providers, estimates that a local move (generally less than 50 miles) costs $150 per hour for a team of three movers. TaskRabbit typically costs less than hiring professional movers. This should be outlined in their profiles, but it’s something to ask about. Some workers may charge extra if you live in a higher floor walk-up. Dedicated moving (think loading and unloading a truck) will cost the most. Moving-related services, such as packing and unpacking, TV mounting, or hauling, will be midrange. Certain tasks, such as IKEA furniture assembly, may be billed on a per item basis rather than an hourly rate. Each Tasker lists their rate on their page, and you can filter by price.Įlite Taskers-those with many positive reviews and jobs completed-will be on the higher end of the cost spectrum. TaskRabbit listed average project rates of $59–$154 for help moving and $83–$186 for a full-service move. When we searched for a move of the same size and scope in Denver, we were shown hourly rates of $38–$165. When we searched for help with a medium-sized, full-service move in New York City, we were shown hourly rates ranging from $25–$250. Taskers are free to set their own prices, which vary by city. TaskRabbit’s prices are advertised as hourly rates. |
